Our story

Started at our kitchen table, not a boardroom.

Sootheroo is a husband-and-wife thing. We're a family of four in Melbourne, and somewhere between the toddler years and the many, many stuffed animals that came with them, we kept asking the same question: why were all the softest, most huggable plush toys modelled on animals from somewhere else — when some of the most lovable characters we knew were already in our own backyard?

So we designed our own. Every character is native to Australia — from the coastal cockatoo to the shy little bilby — built with the same floppy, weighted, ultra-soft construction that made boutique plush famous, and tested to a standard we'd genuinely hand to our own kids, because that's exactly who it's made for.

Care guide

Keeping your Sootheroo soft for years

Every character is built from the same materials, so one care routine covers the whole crew.

Washing

Hand wash cold, using a mild detergent. Gently squeeze — never wring — to remove excess water. The weighted poly-pellet base is sealed in its own internal pouch, so it's a spot-clean job for the base rather than a full soak whenever possible. Never machine wash or tumble dry: the agitation can shift the internal filling and affect the weighted balance that gives each character its floppy feel.

Drying

Air dry flat, out of direct sunlight. Reshape the ears, wings, or limbs while damp so they dry in their natural floppy position. Direct sun and heat can fade the dyed fur over time — a shaded spot indoors is best.

Brushing and fluffing

The high-pile shaggy fur (12–15mm) on the body and the short-pile minky underneath can flatten with heavy cuddling. A soft-bristle brush, used gently in the direction of the pile, restores the fluff. Brush the crest, ears, and tail separately — they're finer and shouldn't be over-brushed.

Storage

Store away from direct heat and damp — a cupboard shelf or open display both work. Keep away from pets, since the poly-pellet base can be an irresistible chew target for curious dogs.

On the tag

Every Sootheroo carries a woven satin tush tag sewn into the rear seam, printed with washing instructions, material content (100% polyester fibres), a batch number for traceability, and safety certification icons. Each character is also individually metal-detected and seam-tested before packing, and every fabric used is AZO-free, heavy-metal-free, and REACH compliant — recommended for ages 12 months and up.

Recommended use

Sootheroo characters are designed for supervised cuddling and play from 12 months. As with any soft toy, we don't recommend leaving any plush in a cot or sleep space with a child under 12 months, in line with general safe-sleep guidance.

When cuddle time is over

One more happy ending

As parents, we've got a cupboard full of toys our own two have outgrown — and it never sits right binning something that was loved that hard. So when your Sootheroo's cuddling days are done, send it home to us instead.

1. Send it back

Once it's been loved enough, post it back to us — any character, any condition.

2. We give it some love

We clean and refurbish every toy ourselves, by hand — the same care we'd want for our own kids' things.

3. It finds a new home

Where we can, it goes to a child who could use a cuddle — at no cost to them, and one less toy in landfill.
